Weekly Update- Sept 30-Oct 4th

SCHOOL NEWS

We had a great week! The District Cross
Country Run was in Wetaskiwin on Wednesday, Terry Fox on Thursday
and Friday was PJ Day.

VISITORS TO THE SCHOOL

We welcome and truly enjoy parents in our school. However, all parents
and guests please check in at the office and sign in before entering
the school.  This is so important for everyone's safety as extra adults
in the school need to be accounted for. Please do not be surprised if a
staff member asks if you have checked in with the office.  We want to
keep classroom disruptions to a minimum, so please leave anything for students
to pick up in the office.  Please meet your child outside of the
building, as this helps with safety and congestion in our hallways.
Thank you for helping us keep our students and staff safe.
The only exception is our Pre-Kindergarten parents as pick up and drop off
procedures are different.

EARLY DISMISSAL

Reminder is that first Wednesday of the month. Our first will be this
Wednesday, Oct 2, 2019.  There is no kindergarten on that day as well.
Dismissal will be at 2:20 pm.

when you will be going skating.

Farm Credit Canada's Campaign to Drive Away Hunger!

Thanksgiving is a time for being grateful for all that we are fortunate to have in our lives. It can also be a perfect opportunity for children to learn to share their blessings. In the spirit of giving, Bellevue School is organizing a school wide collection of non-perishable food items for the Leduc and District Food Bank by supporting the Farm Credit Canada campaign to Drive Away Hunger. Every classroom will receive bags to collect the donations so they can see the bags fill up every day. Thank you for your generosity to help those who may be in need in our community, and for helping your child learn about generosity and caring for our community. We will be collecting donations from Monday, September 30 to Friday, October 11.  For more information on FCC please see the link below:
For easy reference, here are the most needed food items (according to Food Banks Canada):
* pasta, rice and sauce * canned meats and fish * meat alternatives (packaged nuts, peanut butter, soy) * beans, soups and stews * canned and powdered milk * canned fruits and vegetables * whole grain cereal * infant foods and formula * cooking supplies (flour, oil, spices) * cash for food banks to purchase fresh items

technology can impact the developing teenage brain. This session will review
some of the risks but also the benefits of technology. Parents and children

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING

One of our school's goals is to improve the social emotional wellness of our students. Improving social emotional wellness will help improve student learning.  Our school is already doing a lot of great things.  From teaching regulation strategies like Zones of Regulation and MindUP, to different opportunities for clubs and recess activities. We also host assemblies for students to both celebrate student achievement and to teach some character education. Every week, Mme El Khatib and Mr. Larson will be working with students at each grade level with character education and wellness. This month, the focus is on respect. Students will be learning how to "fill each others bucket".

TECHNOLOGY FEE

You will notice that the school district has added a new Division Technology Fee of $10.00 for students in Grades 1-3 and $20.00 for students in Grades 4-12. We have included a note from central office describing the rationale for the fee and what it covers.

The BGRD technology access fee will cover a variety of new software tools for students. The first such tool is assistive technology software, this will help students by reading text on the screen from websites they visit and documents they create, listening to your work read back to you helps catch writing errors and having text read from other content helps with understanding. The program also provides word prediction for struggling writers, standard and visual dictionaries, highlighting and organization tools and speech to text abilities. A second new software application will be a self assessment tool that uses machine learning to provide writing feedback for the student to help improve spelling, grammar, sentence structure and provide suggestions for improvement. Lastly we will be providing creative publishing and charting tool to enable students to increase creativity and capability beyond a standard document or drawing.

Another use of the technology fee is for internet access. Our internet costs are increasing and a new contract by Alberta Infrastructure is greatly increasing the cost to school divisions. The funds will help manage that access, provide increased bandwidth for BYOED and improve protection for students accessing the internet.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE PROTOCOL

At school, we practice a variety of emergency response protocols throughout the year.  Information can be found on our website or using this link.  Next week we will be practicing evacuation procedures with the students.
